Health Benefits of Yoga

Yoga is an ancient way that has been practiced for thousands of years, traditional and for most people, a mysterious enigma. If practitioners would speak of the many benefits that they had both mental and physical health expert, would seem to be practicing yoga than just good one, or whose claims were not believed.

In our modern society, we are probably looking to yoga first as "training" to. When practiced over time, yoga tends to level pulse rate, stabilize the nervous system,normal stomach and gastric activity to hormones, and increasing the range of motion of joints. It increases energy, stamina, immunity and cardiovascular efficiency. It improves hand-eye coordination, reaction time, dexterity, and helps the person to get a quiet and restful sleep.

Yoga for Great Tennis with Anastasia

Yoga for Great Tennis with Anastasia Review



This video is instructed by Anastasia, Jivamukti-certified yoga teacher and avid tennis player/consultant. She explains that the practice is designed to help improve your tennis game, and throughout the practice, she makes frequent references to how specific poses might assist you with various aspects of playing tennis. Although I'm not a tennis player, the tennis comments didn't bother me, but other non-tennis players might find them annoying. Also, ads for Anastasia's web site, Steady Bliss, occasionally appear on screen. The DVD is chaptered only to allow you to skip the introduction; the practice itself is not broken up.

The practice, which is performed outdoors in a scenic ocean-side setting, begins seated with several chants of OM (Anastasia instructs via voiceover throughout) and then moves into cat cow/stretches. Anastasia then embarks upon her version of sun salutation series A, adding in poses such as side plank, warrior 1, warrior 2, and triangle. She transitions to sun salutation series B, again performing warrior 1 and 2 but also adding warrior 3 as well as a seated twist. She concludes the standing postures with high lunge, moving into revolved crescent lunge and then binding this posture. Next comes a backbend series consisting of cobra, boat (the face-down version), and bridge pose. Anastasia then performs a reclined twist, does several spinal rolls to a seated position, and then moves into full and reclined hero's poses, which she states are extremely beneficial for the knees. Forward bends follow, including seated forward bend and head-to-knee pose, and then table pose transitions to inversions, including plow, shoulderstand, and fish. Anastasia concludes the practice with a lengthy (about 5 ? minutes) savasana. During savasana, the soundtrack of relaxing piano music and ocean waves continues, and then Anastasia brings the practice to a close at about 49 minutes total.

This is a nice intermediate-level practice, although I somewhat preferred Anastasia's Yoga for Tennis Elbow and Bad Knees to this one, maybe because the latter was shorter. Yoga for Great Tennis felt a little long to me, probably because it is so strenuous (i.e., there were MANY chaturanga to upward dog to downward dog transitions). However, someone who has at least an intermediate level of experience in yoga, enjoys a vigorous practice, and cross-trains yoga with other sports activities (including tennis) is likely to enjoy this video.

Ashtanga Yoga

Ashtanga Yoga or Power Yoga is an ancient system of Yoga taught by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois in Ashtanga Yoga Research Institute in Mysore, India. In the U.S. it is taught as an aggressive training where you move quickly from one place to another to build strength and endurance. There is little emphasis on meditation with Ashtanga, and at the end of the session, you will feel more like you have completed a traditionalStrength training workout or calisthenic than you would with any other type of yoga. Ashtangais rather a physically challenging workout.

Bikram Yoga

Bikram Yoga is practiced in a room (sometimes unventilated) heated to about 105 degrees Celsius. The aim is to relax the muscles and sweat to cleanse the body and remove symptoms of disease and chronic pain. To my knowledge it does not have any research on the safety or efficacy of Bikram, and soI do not recommend it because of the potential danger of dehydration, changes in blood pressure and heart problems during exercise in such an inhospitable environment. This is particularly true for persons who, although an existing heart problem or high blood pressure, but do not know. Bikram has more popular, and some people swear by it. I recommend that you speak with your doctor if you have decided first to try it.

Hatha Yoga

Hatha yoga is themost popular type of yoga taught in the U.S., was Swatmarama of Yogi in India in the 15th A century. Hatha Yoga is the most commonly practiced type in the U.S. and is excellent for beginners. It is gentle, with slow and gentle movements and emphasis on the participation of the poses and integrating your breathing into the movement. It is prepared for a great introduction to yoga, as it will include a variety of asanas, pranayama, and and singing. Hatha YogaFor other types of yoga, which could be taught on your yoga center. Hatha is a good way to stretch themselves, the muscles work, get in touch with your body to relax and reduce stress.

Kundalini Yoga

Lyengar Yoga

Lyengar Yoga is a form of yoga, hatha used is similar to, but itfocuses more on body posture and balance, will hold more, and with props such as straps, blankets, and blocks. It is also a good choice for beginners.

Kundalini yoga emphasizes rapid movement through the poses and emphasizes breathing, chanting and meditation. It is a spiritual feel than Hatha and focuses on energy balance in the body.

I really like the flow in this dvd, and the sequences are really good. Note, this is not a restorative practice, this is power yoga with some emphasis on back exercises. I don't think this is a good workout for people with acute back pain. I have chronic back pain for a year now due to an injury. I don't think I could have done this dvd 6 months ago. My pain right now is chronic but not intense, so I could do the practice and It felt good. However, even though I really like the workout, I didn't enjoy the instructor's voice that much. She seems to be a nice lady, but sometimes I got very distracted by her voice. But overall is a nice power yoga practice.

Thick Yoga Mat

A yoga mat is probably the most important part of yoga equipment, since it cushions the hard parts of the body from the ground. Have you ever seen the word yoga, and thought that the woman in a white jersey on the cereal box? The next thought that comes to mind is, "Wait, I can not even touch my toes. That would be really silly in a yoga class. Forget it." Chanting is not for me. "Think again. This article will tell you what is yoga. It is not about women in white tights. It is not about auditioning for Cirque du Soleil does not work. It is not about words you sing have no ideaabove.

Yoga is a Sanskrit word for connection. This yoga, we combine the different facets of a person. We are together of body, mind and soul. In this way we combine yoga together, these three parts to form an integrated human being. The actual pose, or asana portion of yoga is only one method by which we can integrate the people. In essence, yoga means, a sense of balance, concentration and achieve improved breathing. If we all have astructured breathing exercise which would improve lung capacity and increase circulation, then that would be yoga. In fact, the first step in doing yoga is to understand breathing and its effect on the human body. Physiology tells us that the functioning of the human body is highly dependent on our breathing.

We know that when we are anxious, our breathing is short and fast. When we are relaxed it is long and deep. The latter produces a more efficient human body and Cells to respond that an effective infusion of oxygen to yield reached their peak levels.

Accessible Yoga for Every Body: Basic Series 2 (DVD) Review



I just finished this program a few minutes ago and wanted to share my thoughts on it.

As a person with a daily yoga practice for the last seven years, a participant in regular classes, and with a home practice that incorporates programs of this sort(over 70 VHS/DVDs at last count) I would say that overall I really liked this.

While my favorite type of yoga practice is vinyasa flow based, I do like to alternate with Gentle programs.

While I was doing this particular program I was thinking it might be a program that would even be gentle enough for my mom (who is in her 60's), but as it continued I would have to say that there were a few spots where I felt it might be a little unsafe for her (and she has some experience with Yoga from classes and uses the Yoga Zone Basics 5 tape set).

Even though Ms. Ward explains things very well and stresses to work at your own level and that "Yoga should never hurt", there are no modifications shown. For someone without previous experience of Yoga this could be a problem.

There were a few times where I felt that had I not had the experience I have doing yoga that I could have caused some strain , particularly in my knees. I always listen to my body and don't try to always do exactly what the instructor is doing if I feel it's not sound for me at that given moment, but that has come with years of experience.

Still, as an overall routine I did like this a lot and I can see that I'll use it quite frequently on my "gentle days".

I really like her sequencing of the poses, the pacing, and the fact that there is a long relaxation at the end.

It's about an hour long, but it really goes by quite quickly. I think Susan Winter Ward is an excellent instructor who has a great feel for teaching and a really soothing voice (which I find really helps in terms of the "feel" of the practice).

So, in spite of my concerns I would highly recommend this practice but I think it is probably good to have at least a little bit of experience with yoga to be on the safe side.

Bikram Yoga - Is it Dangerous Or Not?
